Duties

As an Immigration Specialist, your duties will include: Determine the appropriateness of the visa statutes and program category requested. Resolve problems of conflicting regulatory and/or procedural requirements. Advise visiting program participants of the necessity to comply with applicable laws and regulations. Conduct presentations/workshops/orientations to deliver immigration and cultural information to staff and foreign scientists. Prepare and issue official government certificates and documents pertaining to immigration and visa issues. Provide information to maintain the Enterprise Database and other Division tracking systems.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.
  • Employment is subject to the successful completion of the pre-appointment process (i.e., background investigation, verification of qualifications and job requirements, completion of onboarding forms, submission of required documents, etc.)
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Applicants must meet all qualifications requirements within thirty (30) calendar days of the closing date of this announcement, including time in grade.

Qualifications

For the GS-9 level: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: processing immigration/non-immigration visitor documents and petition requests; ensure compliance with U.S. Department of State and Homeland Security immigration rules and regulations; preparing necessary documents for immigration/non-immigration visitor cases as well as the personal, financial, and administrative documents pertinent to each case. OR EDUCATION: Completion of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR Combination of Education and Experience: a combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. For the GS-11 level: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: processing visa requests with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services; analyzing difficult immigration issues using reference tools to determine appropriate course of action; resolving complex problems with immigration/non-immigration foreign visitor document requests; obtaining additional information; providing instructions regarding proper completion of visa request packages; determining the appropriate type of visa. OR Education: completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., if related; OR Combination of Education and Experience: a combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. For the GS-12 level: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing advice on immigration and visa procedures and requirements; analyzing changes in laws or regulations to identify effects on Programs; developing proposed new policies, procedures and methods for applying immigration policy; developing informational materials, workshops, group orientations, and presentations on immigration/visa related activities. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
