The incumbent serves as a Maintenance Mechanic performing tasks involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Martinsburg VAMC building services that include plumbing, laundry, kitchen, carpentry and steam piping systems. Incumbent will be assigned to the Mechanical Shop, Operations and Maintenance section of Facility Management Service

Duties

Major Duties: Plumbing & Pipefitting: Install, modify, and/or repair new and existing utility systems to include but not limited to: fire sprinkler systems, sewage and gas systems, vacuum and high-pressure air systems, high pressure steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, and potable water distribution systems. Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and layout routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment. Determine and install valves, traps, and unions needed for the proper operation of systems. Perform repairs, i.e. rebuilding pumps, replacing items such as mechanical seals, bearings, valves, pipefitting's, and sprinkler systems. Repairing insulation, re-packing valves and re-piping systems is also required along with various other repairs as determined by the Maintenance Shop Supervisor. Install, modify and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems, and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, circulating pumps, radiators, piped oxygen, and compressed air systems. Installs, modifies, and repairs systems described above by setting up systems routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper pitch and elevation and determines and installs such things as risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators in the combination needed to support the pressures of the systems, while ensuring proper operation. Repairs, maintains, and modifies related equipment such as hot water storage tanks, heat exchangers, condensate pumps, instantaneous water heaters, vacuum pumps, chemical pot feeders, and like equipment including controls and regulators. Performs cutting and fitting pipe with a cutting torch and tack in place with an AC or DC welder. Repair and maintain hydraulic sprinkler systems, taking systems down for repair without interruptions of the zone balances. Equipment Repair & Maintenance: Repairs and/or replaces kitchen equipment to include but not limited to: dishwashers, pot and pan machines, conveyor set-up lines, dirty dish conveyors, and steam cookers. Perform daily rounds on equipment and records readings in accordance with policies and procedures. Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics on all equipment as assigned and make repairs as necessary and required. Perform routine scheduled preventive maintenance. Write, complete, and close work orders as required. Ability to select and use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment in the course of assignments and repairs. Install new equipment and systems that fall within the scope of journeyman level work as determined by Maintenance Shop Supervisor. Perform all operations in a safe and efficient manner. Equipment must be started and stopped to ensure equal run times and to maintain maximum efficiency. Follow all accepted trade practices in the repair and operation of mechanical systems under their control. Determines the layout, measurements, materials, and tolls required to construct concrete structures (walls, slabs, footers, form, etc.) at a journeyman level. Rig scaffolding, hand and finish dry-wall, having the ability to work from ladders (extension and all step ladders), using and following all safety guidelines. Performs preventative maintenance and repairs, installs or replaces building service hardware, floor coverings, ceiling tile, roofs, windows, doors, frames, etc. Determines the methods, techniques, devices and materials for the surfaces to be repaired and finished. Prepares coating materials by tinting, matching, blending and mixing carious additives. Applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices (brush, rollers, sprayers, etc.) and responsible for ensuring that the coating matches and meets requirements. Welding: Weld either by electric or acetylene on different types of metal such as cast iron, steel, aluminum, or copper. Have the ability to braze and solder with an iron or torch to mend, repair, or install equipment. Sheet Metal: Develops patterns, pays out, cuts, forms, assembles, and installs sheet metal duct systems for heating, air conditioning, ventilating pipes, and other items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and patterns. Assembles, constructs, reconstructs, and makes repairs to metal furniture and other items pertaining to sheet metal work. Perform brazing, soldering, and welding the most common types of metals, such as iron, steel, and copper. Operate lathes, power hacksaws, and related equipment. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed between the hours of 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM; There are times when the incumbent will be required to work overtime in support of the VAMC's mission; Most work will be conducted inside with possible exposure to temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, chemicals, water, steam, loud noises and occasional inclement weather; The use of protective clothing or gear, such as rubber aprons, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, safety goggles, gloves or face shield, is frequently required; Incumbent will be issued with arc flash rated uniforms, to include: pants, long sleeve shirts, cotton tee shirts that are required to be worn in full while on duty; Incumbent may also be exposed to the following dangers: electrical shock, chemicals, scalds, cuts, bruises, or broken bones. This position has the potential for exposure to asbestos. This position has the potential for exposure to loud noises. This position has the potential for exposure to lead. Other significant requirements: Must become certified, through station training, in ASSE Medical Gas Maintenance 6040 and Medical Gas Installer 6010. Must be able to work in all weather conditions. Wear a half face or full-face respirator when required for operations or repairs. Become certified as a West Virginia Groundwater Distribution Operator.
