The incumbent serves as a Maintenance Mechanic performing tasks involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center building services that include carpentry and painting. This position is assigned to the Mechanical Carpentry Shop.

Duties

Major Duties: interpret drawings, blueprints, and instruction manuals. measure and layout work independently. journeyman level masonry skills (concrete block and brick walls and floors) and journeyman skills to insure proper use of power tools such as electric mortar mixers, masonry saws, grinders and drills and hand tools such as trowels, chisels, and masonry hammers. knowledgeable in all types and ratios of mortar mixes. grout and purge walls and other surfaces at a journeymen level. removal and repair of all masonry structures. layout, measurements, materials, and tools required construct concrete structures (walls, slabs, footers, form, etc.) at a journeyman level. journeyman level to operate power tools such as gasoline powered trowel machine, concrete vibrators, saws, jack hammers, and hand tools such as floats, trowels, screeds, shovels, rakes, and Georgia buggies. operate heavy equipment such as a back hoe. knowledgeable in formulas which calculate and determine various strengths and grades of concrete. assembles, constructs, reconstructs, and repairs metal furniture, shelving and other items pertaining to metal work. repairs and replaces all parts of bedside stands and cabinets and hospital equipment of various kinds. operate various pieces of equipment, power and hand drill presses, power band, cut off saws, power planes, and metal brakes. preventive maintenance and repairs, installs or replaces building service hardware, floor covering, ceiling tile, roofs, windows, doors, door frames, metal studs, etc., on existing buildings and structures. repairs, installs, replaces, assembles or disassembles cabinetry, furniture (both wood and metal), repairs lockers and shelving, relocates and/or removes walls, doors, ceilings, etc., as required for alterations or renovation needs of a Medical Center. maintains necessary material and time records of work performed and enters on time cards and work orders. determines the methods, techniques, devices and materials for the surface repaired and finished. prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice, and paper, steel wool, filling shaping and leveling with synthetic resins and stucco. prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing in various additives. applies coating material with any of the accepted trade devices, including those designed to give special effects; for example, rollers, spray guns, texture brushes, and dry walling material to include drywall compound, primers, latex and paint and lacquer paints. responsible to see that the coating finish meets, match, texture, decorative, thickness and level requirements. knowledge of coating materials, methods, devices, and techniques; and how they are used to get a variety of finish results on various kinds of surfaces. planning the materials, tools, and techniques needed and for completing the work. mix paint colors and match colors. hang and finish dry wall and use various spray machines. rig scaffolding for interior and exterior painting. work off of ladders (extension and all size step ladders). safety hazard of working off ladders and scaffolds. work in all weather conditions. other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed between the hours of 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM; There are times when the incumbent will be required to work overtime in support of the VAMC's mission; Most work will be conducted inside with possible exposure to temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, chemicals, water, steam, loud noises and occasional inclement weather; The use of protective clothing or gear, such as rubber aprons, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, safety goggles, gloves or face shield, is frequently required; Incumbent will be issued with arc flash rated uniforms, to include: pants, long sleeve shirts, cotton tee shirts that are required to be worn in full while on duty; Incumbent may also be exposed to the following dangers: electrical shock, chemicals, scalds, cuts, bruises, or broken bones.
