Duties

The incumbent will provide technical leadership and guidance in basic and translational research areas to facilitate the understanding, treatment, and prevention of alcohol use disorder and prevention of alcohol-associated organ damage. These positions offer the opportunities to develop and lead scientific programs on the cutting-edge of research. Program Officers advise the Institute on future scientific directions that encourage research in critical and emerging areas, develop targeted programs to foster innovative and high-impact research, interact with investigators in diverse scientific areas, assess the progress of awarded grants and contracts, and serve as an expert resource for the scientific community and the public. Candidates with a background in science disciplines described below are invited to apply. Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer), Division of Neuroscience and Behavior The Division of Neuroscience and Behavior (DNB) of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is seeking candidates to lead programs in basic mechanistic research on Alcohol Use Disorder. The preferred candidates will have documented scientific expertise and research experience in one of the following areas: (1) basic and translational human neuroscience using functional and structural neuroimaging methods and analyses, and emerging neuromodulation technologies; (2) human genomics/epigenomics/genetics research applied to complex, behavioral and biological phenotypes and medically relevant risk factors. Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer), Division of Metabolism and Health Effects The Division of Metabolism and Health Effects (DMHE) of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) seeks candidates to provide programmatic support for research on health consequences of alcohol misuse, specifically alcohol-associated organ damage. Candidates with a background in physiology, cell biology, or molecular biology, along with insight into health, disease, and recovery processes are invited to apply. Specific expertise in the biology of any of the following are helpful: liver, pancreas, lung, the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or immune systems, the microbiome, cancer, aging, nutrition, or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Experience with clinical trial design, statistics, bioinformatics, data science, genomics, or epigenetics would also be of benefit. Physician Scientists and Basic Scientists are welcome to apply
