This position is located in the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Genetics (LBG), Intramural Research Program (IRP), National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), Bethesda, Maryland. The Technical Laboratory Manager will provide technical and scientific support and assistance in one or more specialized core areas which include basic research studies, technology transfer activities, protocol development and coordination, and management of scientific databases.

Duties

Serves as the principal advisor to the Lab Chief on scientific operational matters. Assists in the formulation of basic scientific policy directives that form the framework or the effective management of the branch’s research programs. Identifies the need and feasibility for providing science policy alternatives either orally or in writing to the Lab/Branch Chief with well-documented descriptions that describe the potential impact for each alternative. Responsible for the management activities of the laboratory including scheduling meetings and preparing issue-based agendas and official records or notes of meetings. Participates in the design and conduct of lab/branch experiments and ongoing studies requiring professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles applicable to molecular and cellular biology. Guides the lab/branch in the creation of effective quality assurance programs. Establishes professional standards that comply with accreditation policies and agency guidelines.

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: In order to qualify for a Technical Laboratory Manager, GS-0601, position you must have successfully completed a full Bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained). ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: To qualify for this position at the GS-13 level, you must have least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: analyzing the effectiveness of scientific research programs; conducting and performing quality assurance of laboratory experiments used in scientific research studies and projects; managing training and resource needs required to support a scientific laboratory; developing scientific material to use at workshops and meetings; and developing and editing briefing materials, planning documents, and technical reports.
