The primary purpose of this position is to overhaul, install, operate, inspect, maintain, store, dispatch, and repair powered and non-powered Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) and associated components.

Duties

- Inspects, troubleshoots, overhauls, modifies, repairs, preserves, stores, services, and dispatches equipment to include but is not limited to generators 750-amp output, alternators 150 KVA rating, frequency converters 150 KVA. - Inspects, troubleshoots, overhauls, repairs, preserves, stores, services, dispatches non-powered AGE equipment to include but is not limited to Aircraft stands, hydraulic carts, LOX, GOX, and nitrogen trailers, towbars, aircraft jacks, fuel bowsers, manual bomb loaders. - Performs major repair, replacement, and overhaul of power support system components such as diesel, multifuel, or gas turbine engines, and electrical accessories of engines. - Troubleshoots, repairs and overhauls heating, air conditioning, pneumatic, and pneudraulic support systems such as heaters, air conditioners, hydraulic test stands and 0-5000 psi compressor equipment. - Maintains records and documents actions. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle up to and including a 2-1/2-ton truck. An appropriate valid driver's license may be required for the position.
  • Position may require the employee to operate a forklift up to 15,000-pound capacity to move heavy power support equipment.
  • Shift work may be required.
  • The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Emergency overtime may be required.
  • May be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a POWERED SUPPORT SYSTEMS MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of principles of electricity (AC/DC), solid-state circuitry, and safety rules and regulations pertaining to powered support systems. Knowledge of the theory and operation of internal combustion turbine, diesel. and gasoline engines. 2. Knowledge of the theory and operation of heating, air conditioning, pneudraulic, pneumatic, and generator power systems. Knowledge of regulations, procedures, and policies related to record maintenance and documentation. 3. Skill in reading, interpreting; and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, AFOSH Standards, and similar guides. Skill in using hand and power tools, instruments, test equipment, and electrical multi meters to include special tools such as digital test equipment (C02, Turbine engine, Temperature Controller), hydrostatic testers, load testers up to 100,000 lbs., hammers, drills, valve spring compressors, and inside and outside micrometers. 4. Skillin installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, and uninterruptible power systems; and in maintaining, overhauling, repairing, and reconditioning internal combustion engines, both diesel and gasoline, also turbine engines. Skill in troubleshooting complex situations related to electrical power generators. 5. Ability to apply shop procedures, policies, written and oral instructions, and directives sufficient to provide training to others. 6. Required a minimum of type I and II certification for Federal 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F. Air conditioning repair and recovery of refrigerants or must be willing to obtain within 6 months of EOD to the position. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Performs work, which involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing, and arm movement. Sometimes must work in awkward positions or cramped areas. Must frequently lift and carry items weighing up to about 40 pounds and lift heavier items using jacks. hoists, or helpers. WORKING CONDITIONS: May work inside or outside. Inside work involves frequent exposure to drafts, changing temperature, and loud noise. Outside work may involve exposure to bad weather, rain or snow, or wet or icy conditions. Both inside and outside, frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors or surfaces. May work on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy, and which may be dangerous to operate or repair because of defects. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and electrical shock while repairing, positioning, adjusting, and moving equipment, and is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids, and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, the incumbent must follow numerous safety procedures and wear equipment such as protective eyeglasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, gloves, and clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
