The primary purpose of this position is to perform journeyman duties as an Power Support System Mechanic and serve as a working leader with three (3) or more employees in the troubleshooting, repairing, modification and testing, overhaul, towing, servicing, and repair of a variety of powered/nonpowered equipment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 - Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the Ability to Do the Work of a Powered Support Systems Mechanic Leader without More than Normal Supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of the installation, operation, servicing, dispatching, disassemble, overhaul and repair of aerospace ground equipment (AGE), systems and subsystems. 2. Knowledge of AGE engine, engine parts and components, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic systems, and tools. Ability to plan and lead workers to achieve maximum utilization of personnel, facilities, and equipment. 3. Ability to read and interpret instructions, specifications, and technical orders, etc. and follow safety procedures. 4. Ability to diagnose, detect wear patterns, estimate serviceability of parts, modify and make adjustments to AGE, component, and/or subassembly malfunctions and to determine methods of repair. 5. Skill in using various types of general and special purpose measuring instruments, tools, and test equipment. Ability to do work of the position without more than normal supervision. 6. Knowledge of tool, equipment, and materials accounting and security and ability to clean the work area and/or job site upon completion of work. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing and arm movement. Sometimes must work in awkward positions or in cramped areas. Frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to about 40 pounds and lifting of heavier items using jacks, hoists, or helpers. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside. Inside, incumbent is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noise. Outside, incumbent may work in bad weather, in rain or snow, or in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, incumbent is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors or surfaces. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains, and electrical shock while repairing, positioning, adjusting, and moving equipment, and are exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids, and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, the mechanics follow numerous safety procedures and wear equipment such as protective eyeglasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, gloves, and clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
