Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY As a Public Affairs Specialist (Communications Specialist), you will use your knowledge of and experience with the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs to optimize business results and customer experience by: Arranging press interviews and press conferences with program officials or preparing background material as necessary. Researching, writing, editing and generating press releases, letters to editors, manuscripts, speeches, etc. Optional: ability to produce these products in Spanish. Arranging clearances for press materials within assigned area to assure material is factually and technically accurate.

Qualifications

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Minimum Qualifications: You must have at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service performing at least two (2) of the following: Researching, modifying, and writing press releases for news media, pitching stories to media, or responding to media inquiries. Attending, monitoring, and/or managing press events, including setting up interviews with press and leadership. Managing and establishing working relationships with reporters, identifying reporters for agency's mission or target audience. Researching, monitoring, and analyzing news clips, new outlets, and other press activities to stay informed on trends, present analysis to leadership, and monitor press activity. Spanish language skills including ability to translate short and medium length documents from English to Spanish, including press advisories, social media posts, or op-eds, and comfortability working with Spanish media outlets. OR Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree if related to the work associated with this position OR LL.M. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study. Note: Must submit transcript(s). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to gain employment. If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
