The Statistician position is located with the National Library of Medicine, Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications with the Applied Clinical Informatic Branch.

Duties

Provide expert consultant and advisor to top-level subject matter experts and agency officials on a segment of a research program or statistical project. Provide technical consultation and leadership on complex statistical studies while collaborating with other scientist on aspect so study design, analysis and interpretation. Provide technical expertise with respect to all phases of statistical interpretation. Initiate, formulate, plan, and execute analytic research projects and researches the quality of methodologies and measures pertaining to the assessment of the subject matter being studied. Evaluate new statistical procedures and software to adapt them to projects. Plan and carry out quality control programs to select appropriate statistical methods to ensure the reliability and consistency of the data.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Statistician, GS-1530 position you must have: Education Requirement: A. Have a degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements is given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. OR B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition, in order to qualify at the GS-13 level, you must have: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:initiating, formulating, planning, and executing the statistical portion of analytic research projects; analyzing, interpreting and disseminating statistical research results for health-related study programs; planning, designing and implementing the research criteria and study design and methods for a health-related statistical research program; and developing and using automated applications and programs to analyze statistical data. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
