This position is located in the NIDCR, Office of Science Policy and Analysis. The division plans, conducts, and directs activities in the area of program analysis and provides analytic and interpretive data needed to formulate Institute goals and objectives. Conducts statistical analyses, coordinate reports and manuscripts for publication, and prepares reports and provides interpretation of human population data on trends in morbidity, mortality and care patterns for diseases.

Duties

Serve as an expert consultant on a research program, or statistical project. Identify specific research areas that merit investigation. Develop new hypotheses and approaches for studies, and evaluate the feasibility of such endeavors. Initiate, formulate, plan, and execute statistical studies. Advise scientists on the selection of appropriate study design, statistical analysis, and interpretation of study results. Provide technical consultation and leadership on complex statistical studies. Prepare comprehensive reports of study results. Present results of studies to the scientific community at professional meetings and conferences. Participate in a postdoctoral research training program as instructor and mentor.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Statistician, GS-1530 position, you must have: A. a degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements is given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. OR; B. a combination of education and experience; courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition, in order to qualify for a Statistician, GS-1530 position at the GS-11 level, you must have: A. 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR B. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 obtained in either the private or public sector that included the following tasks and responsibilities: applying a variety of statistical techniques such as logistic regression, survival models, generalized risk models, analysis of frequency distributions, analysis and modeling of multi-variates, sampling, analysis of variance, determining confidence limits, and estimating magnitude; developing or modifying data collection methods; using statistical procedures to summarize, display in graphic form, and analyze factual data; and using automated applications and programs to analyze statistical data; OR C. a combination of education and experience. My experience includes a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition, in order to qualify for a Statistician, GS-1530 position at the GS-12 level, you must have: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 obtained in either the private or public sector that included the following tasks and responsibilities: planning, organizing, and carrying out statistical studies and/or projects for specific project segments; analyzing data using appropriate statistical techniques and presenting verified results along with preliminary interpretations and recommending appropriate statistical methods for carrying out further analyses; planning and designing the criteria and study design and methods for a statistical project; and developing and using automated applications and programs to analyze statistical data. In addition, in order to qualify for a Statistician, GS-1530 position at the GS-13 level, you must have: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 obtained in either the private or public sector that included the following tasks and responsibilities: initiating, formulating, planning, and executing the statistical portion of analytic research projects; analyzing, interpreting and disseminating statistical research results for health-related study programs; planning, designing and implementing the research criteria and study design and methods for a health-related statistical research program; and developing and using automated applications and programs to analyze statistical data.
