Duties

This Float Nurse Practitioner (NP) is located in the Primary Care Service at the Jamaica Plain campus location. This Float NP may cover any VA Boston Healthcare System Primary Care practice at any campus location in which a provider is needed due to retirement, medical leave, or other purpose. Travel time may be available depending on the campus location. This position is a full-time 40 hour per week position. This position may also be filled by a Physician Assistant (PA). All interested PAs must apply through announcement CBTD-12251017-24-HL. VA Primary Care providers manage a complex panel of patients in collaborative teams. Each provider is assigned a registered nurse, clinical associate, and scheduler. Panel sizes are approximately 900 patients per full-time provider and appointment lengths are 60 minutes for new patients and 30 minutes for all other appointments. Telephone and video care are encouraged and telework may be available. There is no on-call, weekend or holiday duty. Care is provided to both men and women Veteran adults. The VA utilizes a national electronic medical record and is known for delivering high quality, evidence-based care within a culture of continuous improvement. The Primary Care Service at VA Boston Healthcare System is leading the VHA's initiative in the Whole Health System of care which includes conventional treatment, but also focuses on self-empowerment, self-healing, and self-care. The Whole Health System approach is informed by evidence-based research and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing. The NP duties include, but are not limited to: Provide nursing and medical services to Veterans and their families/caregivers in both individual and group settings. Designs, implements and revises interdisciplinary patient-driven holistic care plan for life. Maintains knowledge and skills to maintain expertise in area of practice. Accepts personal responsibility for ongoing professional development related to NP competence, including, but not limited to, continuing education related to prescriptive authority and health management. Uses professional standards of care and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. Demonstrates professional behavior (i.e., respect, civility, ability to accept constructive criticism), effective communication and interpersonal skills. Uses team process to identify, analyze and resolve care problems. Communicates appropriately and regularly with the Teamlet for continuity of care with patient's life plan. Fulfills group practice provider responsibilities. Uses a body of research to validate and/or change work group practice. Promotes patient and personnel safety. Integrates biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills, cultural, population and age-specific patient characteristics to provide holistic care. Maintains a work environment that honors diversity. Coaches colleagues in team building. Makes sustained contributions to health care by sharing expertise within and/or outside the Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am- 4:00pm Compressed/Flexible: Not Authorized. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments based on the candidate's education and experience. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Nurse Practitioners: A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Accepted Specialty certifications for this position are: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP), Adult Gerontology NP, or Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP). Preferred Experience: One year of Primary Care experience preferred. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Position is subject to a pre-employment physical and medical examination. This position requires: lifting, carrying; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (8 hours); standing (8 hours); repeated bending; working alone; protracted or irregular hours of work and occasional emotional strain. It also requires intermittent lifting, carrying, straight pulling and straight pushing up to 45 lbs.
