About the Position: This position is located at the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Prevention and Fire Protection Division, Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall, Virginia. Duties

Directs the operation of one major piece of firefighting apparatus and rescue crew. Assures that crew members keep equipment and emergency vehicles in good working order. Leads a crew of three or more firefighters. Directs firefighting crew in the operation of firefighting vehicles and equipment. Leads assigned crew and performs emergency rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical facility. Assign crew members to perform maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment. Respond to on-site accidents and other emergencies. Perform inspection for fire hazards in all types of structures throughout the installation. Prepare and review daily activity reports.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a secret background investigation to determine your suitability for federal employment.
  • Per DoD 6055.06-M, position requires: Airport Firefighter, Driver Operator Pumper/Aerial/ARFF, Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HazMat Awareness/Operations/Tech, EMT-B; certs MUST be provided prior to employment.

Directing crew members in the full performance of firefighting tasks such as, structures, equipment, facilities, hazardous waste, wildland fire response and confined space and high angle rescues. Provide and/or assist in training firefighters in firefighting, emergency management services, fire prevention, fire techniques and procedures. Assign fire prevention tasks to crew members and review their work. Inspect and test fire extinguishing equipment and systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Fire SuppressionFirefighting EquipmentHazardous Materials ResponseTeaching Others Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-???????07).
