Duties

Serves as Assistant Chief for Training with responsibility to develop, coordinate, implement and manage a comprehensive training program for employees of the Fire Prevention and Protection Division. Develops training programs following the guidelines of the International Fire Service Training Association, National Fire Protection Association, Virginia Department of Fire Programs and other applicable proponent organizations. Assumes responsibility for operation, scheduling and maintenance of the fire training simulator and training classrooms. Coordinates training requests from outside agencies. Makes recommendations for correction of any fire hazards or safety hazards observed while performing duties. Directs personnel in all types of emergency response to include vehicle rescue, aircraft crash firefighting, industrial accidents and medical emergencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires you to work 56 hours per week (112 hours per pay period) to include weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • This position requires you to obtain and maintain a national certification as a Safety Officer within six months from the date of entrance on duty,

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Emergency CommunicationFire SuppressionManaging Human ResourcesTeaching Others Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-10).
