The Health Program Specialist (HPS) provides scientific support in planning, coordination, evaluation and communication of research in neuroscience and neurology to stakeholders. There are several HPS positions within the National Institute on Aging (NIA) divisions; Division of Neuroscience, Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology, Division of Behavioral and Social Research and Division of Aging Biology. Duties

Assists in designing and performing detailed analysis of scientific and/or administrative factors affecting research program priorities. Assists in developing and refining criteria for scientific coding (classification) of grants and other award mechanisms with respect to scientific/disease content. Participates in developing scientific initiatives and analyzing their success. Prepares and makes oral presentations to NIA leadership and staff, NIH staff and the extramural community. Writes, formats and edits materials about funding opportunities and the grant applications process. Provides guidance to grantees on their research objectives, funding opportunities, compliance documentation and safety monitoring plans.

Qualifications

Qualifications You qualify for a Health Program Specialist, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: Basic Education Requirement: In order to qualify for a Health Program Specialist, GS-0601, position you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be form an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to the basic requirement, in order to qualify for the Health Program Specialist at the GS-11 level, you must: Have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a related field; OR Demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Government, performing the following types of tasks: coordinating proposed biomedical research projects; assisting in developing and revising reports relevant to biomedical research; and organizing information and presenting findings involving medical and scientific subjects. OR Have a combination of graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. To qualify at the GS-12 level: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal Government, performing the following types of tasks: coordinating, evaluating and/or conducting research projects in complementary and integrative health or related fields; analyzing biomedical research to assess effectiveness of research strategies; and analyzing alternatives and recommending solutions to complex problems affecting conduct of research studies. To qualify at the GS-13 level: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal Government, performing the following types of tasks: planning and assessing research projects in neuroscience, neurology or related fields for appropriateness; analyzing the effectiveness of scientific research strategies for priorities and performance; developing and presenting scientific material at conferences and workshops; and providing advice to other researchers on the performance, planning or management of research projects. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
