This position serves as a senior Health Sciences Safety Manager within the SOSB, with responsibility for the development and administration of safety and health programs and functions to the NIH intramural research community, and NIH workplaces, including laboratories, vivaria, clinical research facilities, and administrative offices.

Duties

Provides technical and administrative leadership, assistance, advice, and consultation on health sciences safety-related issues to SOSB staff. Assists the Chief, SOSB, in developing programs for augmenting professional qualifications and technical capabilities of the SOSB staff. Plans, schedules, and directs comprehensive safety surveys of laboratories, animal research facilities, offices and other areas for the purpose of identifying potential risks and hazards associated with a variety of environments and occupations. Develops evaluation criteria, based on established NIH safety policy, for determining the acceptability of practices, equipment, and facilities for the conduct of hazardous and potentially hazardous biomedical research. Collaborates with the DOHS Safety Training Manager in designing, planning, organizing, and supervising health sciences safety training programs for employees. Serves as a Contract Officers Representative (COR) and works with contract staff to ensure branch and division goals and objectives are met.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Health Specialist, GS-0601, position you must have successfully completed a full 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained). In addition, in order to qualify for a Health Specialist, 0601, at the GS-13 level, you must have: at least one (1) full year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: managing health sciences safety programs; developing and recommending health sciences safety policies; applying laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with health sciences safety requirements; developing standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential health sciences safety hazards; and training workers, supervisors, managers, or other personnel in health sciences safety subjects.
