About the Position: Serves as a Supervisory Public Safety Dispatcher performing duties for Directorate of Emergency Services, Police Services, Fire Services and Emergency Medical Services Divisions. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting and adjusting short-term priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work. Duties

Responsible for caller interrogation to determine the problem and the nature of the call. Identifies the nature of emergency, level of response required, and provides this and any additional information to the responding units. Continuously monitors the installation alarmed facilities, which are linked to the primary monitor/dispatch site. Advises police patrol personnel of appropriate response required for each facility, and monitors for correct response from the facility. Provides emergency medical dispatching and pre-arrival instructions to callers with medical emergencies. Monitors and logs status and availability of police, fire and medical field units to assure an appropriate response is made using a Computer Automated Dispatching System (CADS). Receives, relays, and transfers messages for department personnel. Prepares police blotters, journals, and other associated police and emergency response reports, filing and other administrative duties as required. Use automated information systems to access law enforcement sensitive information.

Requirements

  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility at the Secret level using a Tier 3 background investigation.
  • Completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination is required. The incumbent must meet established hearing and vision tests, and be able to distinguish colors.
  • In accordance with Change 3 of AR 600-85, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program, must successfully pass a urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • Clearance by Installation Security Office background check prior to employment.
  • Must successfully complete 911 communications and national crime information center (NCIC) training and maintain current certification.
  • Failure to maintain minimum standards as outlined in local policy may result in termination of employment.
  • Position is subject to rotating shift work. The incumbent is required to work an alternate work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays) and must wear a uniform while on duty.
  • Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions, Terrorist Force Protection Condition or installation closure. Must report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatching, Emergency Police Dispatching, Emergency Fire Dispatching certification.
  • The incumbent is required to possess and maintain certification Maryland State Hazardous Materials Awareness through an accredited source. Maryland State Police Criminal Justice Information System Certification.
  • The incumbent is required to possess and maintain certification in CPR and first aid through an accredited source.
  • The incumbent is required to possess and maintain certification in Emergency Police Dispatching through an accredited source.
  • The incumbent is required to possess and maintain certification for Maryland State Police Criminal Justice Information System through an accredited source.
  • Required to attend National Accredited Public Safety Dispatcher Training. The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch and Intrusion Detection education requirements through in-service training that is offered locally.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate

Determining appropriate jurisdiction and services to be rendered based on local policy and procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Due to the organizations normal progression applicants may qualify with atleast 1 year at the next lower grader (GS-07) or the second lower level (GS-06) Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
