Job opening: Archivist

Salary: $68 405 - 107 590 per year

You will serve as a Archivist of NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND. This is an obligated position. The former incumbent has return rights to this position under PL 86-585.

Duties

You will encompass the servicing of records held by the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), which includes the arranging, describing, preserving, and providing reference service from public records and historic documents. You will serve as a Processing Archivist assisting in the accomplishment of the Branch mission and functions specifically in the area of the arrangement and description of official records. You will maintain physical, intellectual, and administrative control over all archival materials in their care. You will analyze archival materials in relation to their function, background, content, and use to appraise their inherent evidential or informational values and make recommendations regarding their retention or their destruction.

Requirements

Qualifications

GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Archivist performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Organizing, arranging, describing, and preserving official records and personal papers collections held by the archives; 2) Analyzing archival materials in relation to their function, background, content, and use to appraise their inherent evidential/informational values and/or make recommendations regarding their retention or their destruction; 3) Analyzing, processing, or making available born-digital and digitized records such as electronic files and databases; image capture; data migration; and metadata creation; 4) Assisting with the production of processing plans, finding aids, catalog records, or metadata entries; 5) Digitalizing archival materials and contributing as directed to the maintenance of information for archive digital and textual collections. GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Archivist performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Assisting in some of the following areas - organizing, arranging, describing, and preserving official records and personal papers collections held by the archives; 2) Receiving guidance on the maintenance of archival materials; 3) Performing archival duties related to born-digital or digitized records such as electronic files and databases; image capture; data migration; and metadata creation; 4) Utilizing processing plans, finding aids, catalog records, or metadata entries;5) Assisting with the digitalizing of archival materials or contributing as directed to the maintenance of information for archive digital and textual collections. Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess

A bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
A combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience:
Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.

GS-11 Education Substitute: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

GS-09 Education Substitute: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree

Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.
