The Utility System Operator (USO) works in the Operations Section in the Engineering Department. They are responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the centralized boiler and chiller plant.

Duties

Major duties include; Responsible for the safe operation of the high-pressure steam generation plant which consists of three (3) 300 horsepower fire tube boilers, each capable of generating 10,350 pounds of steam per hour at 125 PSI. Operates and maintains all steam generation plant ancillary support equipment, to include the boiler feed water deaerator, condensate return/ storage tank, associated feed transfer pumps, automated chemical injection systems and blow-down control programmers. Properly aligns, starts, operates and secures the chiller units and associated pumping and water cooling tower systems. Monitors the automated chlorine dioxide injection system. Operates and monitors multiple life safety and patient care related systems. During off-hours tours, the operator must field facility trouble calls, as well as other Engineering service calls. Perform operator-level preventive and corrective maintenance on chillers, cooling towers, boilers, pumps, steam traps, and other associated equipment Work Schedule: Work shift may vary based on facility needs. Position Description Title/PD#: Utility Systems Operator/PD00466A Physical Requirements: This position requires walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy loads daily and occasionally heavy loads. Incumbent must be in good physical condition, have good eyesight with or without glasses and cannot be colorblind. The USO is exposed frequently to temperature extremes, drafts, dampness, water and. noise for work conditions. The majority of work takes place in an industrial environment but does typically require work outdoors, exposed to the elements. They will frequently encounter ladders, catwalks, confined spaces, etc. Incumbent could be subjected to hazards normally encountered in the trade. This position requires working rotating shifts and overtime.
