The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development.

Duties

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. Major Duties: Set up screening stations with Thermal Imaging, Thermometer, PPE, Gloves and Sanitary Wipes. Greets staff, volunteer and contractor in a pleasant and courteous manner. Ensure all staff, volunteer, and contractor have PIV affix as they enter the facility. Provides information and directions to Veterans, staff, volunteers and contractors. Assists with general wayfinding for patients and visitors. Reception and telephonic duties include receiving and directing callers and visitors. Is responsible for prompt, courteous telephone answering and message taking. The incumbent takes messages that are accurate and detailed. Attempts to clarify needs, provides direct answers and/or ensures that responses to callers are expedited. Also assists other staff in answering telephone calls as to reduce wait times. Incumbent may be assigned to any areas of the medical center to assist with telephonic, clerical administrative and receptions duties. Answering calls politely and courteously and provides what is being requested in a timely manner. Answer phone calls from staff to staff such as answering the phones when the staffs are busy and unable to do so, taking calls messages from clinicians or other related medical personnel. In room cleaning of equipment per policy. The employee would wipe down tables, counters and equipment. In addition, provides basic wiping down of all high touch surfaces in surrounding spaces. Contacts environmental system service if there are empty soap dispensers, hand sanitizers, paper towels, etc. Work Schedule: Part-time; Monday - Friday rotating shifts; 40 hours per pay period Initial period typically expected to last more than one year. Program end is generally the Intern's projected graduation date. Duration of appointment will be annotated in participant agreement. - This is a year-round position working 20 hours per week (part-time) during the school year with the possibility of working full-time during school breaks and summer.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/28/2024. Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. (Documents Required) You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below: General Experience: You must have 3 months or 13 weeks of generalized experience. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a high school or GED diploma. (Transcripts Preferred, will accept a diploma) You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Attention to DetailClericalCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical)Interpersonal Skills Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily performed while sitting but can require bending, walking, and standing, carrying light objects such as files, reports, and books. Work will require a major percentage of time utilizing automated systems. Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements in accordance with 5 CFR 362.204. Conversion is not mandatory or guaranteed. The Pathways Program participant will enter into a written Participant Agreement that clearly identifies expectations, a general description of duties, evaluation procedures, work schedules and minimum eligibility requirements for conversion to term or permanent positions in the competitive service.
