This position is located in Veterinary Services Field Operations at a USDA Livestock Quarantine facility which facilitates the importation of livestock, poultry, exotic birds, and zoo animals into the United States through the assigned area. These centers are principal facilities in the U.S. for examining, testing and isolating imported animals to assure they are free of disease and parasites harmful to American livestock and poultry.

Duties

The duties may include, but are not limited to: Performs preventive maintenance of buildings which includes carpentry, painting, flushing sewer lines, roof repair, and maintenance of electrical and system controls. Recognizes the need for periodic repairs, estimates materials required to make repairs, and helps plan and implement an ongoing program of modifications and alterations to accommodate changing needs. Assists in the ordering and purchasing of supplies and materials needed for repairs. Assists other maintenance workers in accomplishing tasks. Maintains and operates hand and power tools used in carpentry, masonry, painting, roofing, plumbing, and electrical. Provides assistance in animal care taking, to include the feeding, care, unloading and release, biosecurity, restraint, and general animal husbandry for a variety of animal species.

Requirements

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

  • The work is performed in a high security quarantine animal facility.
  • Frequent showers are required.
  • Work is performed inside and outdoors, exposing you to extreme weather conditions and shifts of temperature, humidity, excessive noise, and slippery and uneven surfaces.
  • There is a possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, and scratches, and working in the presence of animals may occasionally present a danger of injury or health hazard.
  • Lifts and carries equipment and materials varying from 20-100 lbs., often up ladders and on scaffolds.
  • Work is often performed in areas difficult to reach and causes discomfort. You will be required to stand, stoop, stretch, and assume tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Holidays, weekend, and overtime work may be required.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must show that you have had training and experience of sufficient scope and quality to provide you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
