The incumbent serves as the supervisor of the Architectural Maintenance Shop, Baltimore Campus, Facilities & Engineering Service, VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS). He/she directs various immediate, recurring and long-range maintenance and repair functions and projects involved in the operation and upkeep of a 700,000 square foot acute care medical facility, comprised of hospital, research and administrative functions.

Duties

Major Duties: Incumbent is responsible for assuring that the engineering management information system is in full compliance at the shop levels and that all requirements are met by shop standards. Incumbent also plans work assignments of various trades and assures proper and timely project progress, regularly audits preventive maintenance and other scheduled work assuring timely completion, proper quality and efficiency performance for all shop areas. Providing input to engineering management on such matters as the ability of shops to accomplish work as scheduled, meeting production standards and project completion reports. Assigns and explains work standards and requirements to subordinates, sets deadlines and directs sequence of work, makes changes, shifts work among shops to balance workloads or to meet deadlines. The incumbent shall also have the administrative responsibility for reviewing and initiating personnel actions and disciplinary actions when necessary. The incumbent shall also provide accurate and timely performance appraisals, as well as review and approval of time and leave while assuring that shift coverage is sufficient. He/she shall also dispense work and leave equitably as to avoid conflict. The incumbent serves as the supervisor of the Architectural Shop (Carpentry, Masonry, Lock and Paint). Incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating and directing a variety of work related operations or functions of such scope, volume and complexity to assure performance of assigned maintenance and repair functions. Incumbent must possess knowledge of all trades and allied fields for which he has supervisory responsibility of: Carpentry, Masonry, Lock and Paint, and the ability to interpret complex instructions, and an understanding of the use of tools and equipment common to each of these trades. The Maintenance Supervisor must keep abreast of improvements in the various fields of engineering, materials, and diversified kinds of equipment, determine the most economical use of new products without sacrificing safety and future maintenance. Thorough knowledge of the full range of carpentry, painting, masonry, and plastering, materials and practices to select appropriate materials, the incumbent is able to troubleshoot and improvise and alter plans when established methods are not practical. Incumbent is also responsible for long-range planning and efficient functioning of various shops. Included in this work is the proper coordination of recurring maintenance along with various station level projects. During budgetary preparation, incumbent provides input to engineering management with regard to recurring maintenance requirements. Also included are maintenance projects that are included in the medical center's five year facility plan. Incumbent will interview applicants referred for positions over which he/she has direct responsibility and makes selection recommendations to the next higher-level supervisor for Maintenance and Operations for review and consideration. In addition, incumbent shall give appropriate orientation to new employees regarding regulations and procedures, work and work area responsibilities, and all other particular facts pertaining to facility requirements. The incumbent is also required to keep abreast of all new trends in the trades, such as lead abatement, new methods of paint applications and proper mixture of paint chemicals, for advanced key/lock applications and key control programs, masonry, etc. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7am-3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor/PD170990 Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized
