Duties

As an Research Microbiologist you will: Conceive, design and conduct independent research in the scientific field of vector-borne bacterial diseases that is recognized for its difficulty. Design research and recommend or determine appropriate experimental methods and procedures. Advise on, administer, and perform professional and scientific work in fields of science concerned with living organisms, their distribution, characteristics, life processes, and adaptations and relations to their environment. Formulate concepts; develop broad hypotheses; prepare research plans; carry out investigations and experiments; analyze and interpret results; and present results to the broader scientific community through peer-reviewed technical publications and journals. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work, when necessary.

Basic Qualifications: Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. or Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: 1) conducting scientific studies related to vector-borne bacterial infectious diseases and 2) performing tests for the detection of infectious microorganisms, particularly those spread by ticks or fleas. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
