About the Position: This position is located with the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, 407th Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, Transportation Division, in Fort Carson, Colorado.

Duties

Operate 120 ton diesel-electric locomotives used in switching, regrouping, placing, spotting, and making up trains on the post and for a short distance to a rail head off the post limits. Observe safety rules, post operating regulations, signs, rights-of-way, and crossings continually in switching and moving cars to ensure safe movement at all times. Maintain a constant and vigilant lookout while operating the engine. Document whether other trains are displaying signals, observe position of all switches, watch for obstructions on or near the tracks, and check to note whether train is intact and if there is any indication of hot journal boxes. Perform operator maintenance on engines, checking brakes, warning devices, reversing lever, sander, and air, oil, electrical, and temperature gages for proper operation. Grease items, add fuel and oil, clean equipment, and replace air hoses. Inspect assigned rail equipment (box and flat cars).

Requirements

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to re-certify locomotive certification every three (3) years.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain any installation and/or license required for the type of vehicle being driven.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 30% of the time.
  • This position will require the incumbent to routinely work irregular work hours (such as before 0600 or after 1800 hours) to accommodate fluctuations in workload based on the daily mission requirements.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. (Note: You must attach a copy of your license or certification with your application package.) Physical Effort: Must be able to climb up and down steep steps or ladders to board and leave the train. Locomotive operation requires continuous manipulation of hand-operated controls while stretching, turning, and shifting position for best visibility. Is subject to physical strain from swaying motions and jarring movements, particularly when coupling cars and running on rough track. Maintenance work requires working on top of and under the locomotives and railroad cars in cramped and awkward positions. Requires frequent lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 45 pounds and the pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning of parts and assemblies. Working Conditions: Operates the locomotives in a cab which may be hot or cold, and inspects and maintains the equipment indoors in a Rail Maintenance Facility, and occasionally outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to bad weather, exhaust fumes, loud noise, and dirt or dust. Is exposed to the possibility of cuts, burns, sprains and more serious injury due to working in, on and around moving trains.
