Duties

Receive requests from physicians and other health care providers for examinations. Start intravenous fluids and monitors all devices. Recognizes the significance of all structures and the differences between artifact and normal pathology. Perform the full range of diagnostic CT examinations/procedures, including but not limited to: neuro, chest, abdominal, pediatric, extremity, body, musculoskeletal. Select proper technical settings and scan protocol from computer menu. Administer oral and intravenous contrast material observing Universal Precautions, as indicated by exam protocol, interview and screening process. Burn CT images on an as needed basis; archives images to current Picture Archival Communication System (PACS) system. Instruct medical, professional, and paraprofessional personnel in the theoretical and practical aspects of quality assurance and quality control in the Radiology Department as it relates to PAC system. Monitor radiologic procedures, control systems, workload reporting methods, and training programs to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies for accreditation. Recommend changes and modifications to better meet radiology department requirements; advises concerned personnel on regulations and policies to be observed. Train medical personnel on the full range of diagnostic CT examinations/procedures positioning, anatomy, and cross-sectional anatomy referencing. Help supervisor to investigate, evaluate, and document all QI/QA problems or actions within the department. Assist the supervisor in developing quality control procedures for new radiologic examinations as they are introduced into the Radiology Department and modifies existing procedures as the need arises. Perform involved diagnostic procedures such as, myelography, and venography, upper and lower gastrointestinal examinations, arthrography, bone age, orthopedic studies, and foreign body localization. Perform magnetic resonance imaging of heads, spines, extremities, and bodies. Receive patients, explains methods and safety precautions of procedures, starts IVs, positions patient and produces necessary images for the requested examination. Assists in the triage of scheduling patients.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A favorable National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) may be required for this position.
  • This position is a drug Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to pre-employment drug test and random drug testing in accordance with AR 600-85.
  • All health care personnel with frequent and regular contact with children under the age of 18 will be required to complete the Army Criminal Background Check (CBC).
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • American Heart Association approved Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. (Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) does not substitute for BLS.)
  • May be required to work evenings/nights, on-call schedules, rotating shifts, extended hours, weekends, holidays and/or other schedules common to hospital operations.
  • May be required to wear and use personal protective equipment as required and provided by the employer.
  • Position is NOT weather essential. Employee will be required to report to work during periods of inclement weather (e.g. CODE WHITE).
  • A pre-appointment physical may be required.
  • Employee may be required to lift up to 45 pounds without assistance. Assistance is required when lifting over 45 pounds.
  • Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75.
  • Have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.
  • Employee must have valid Computed Tomography (CT) and Diagnostic X-Ray (RT) certifications with registrations from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) that are required to be maintained for both modalities.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography): Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements: (1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing diagnostic CT examinations/procedures, administering contrast for CT exams/procedures and maintaining proper equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as diagnostic radiology/radiography. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirement is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
