Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team in the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut (USAO-CT). You will provide case management, legal research and trial support for a team of Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). Typical work assignments will include: Performing legal research to compose legal documents and correspondence. Preparing legal briefs and summaries of analyses. Compiling substantive information on legal subjects and collecting, analyzing, and evaluating evidence connected to hearings, appeals, litigation or advisory services. Preparing immunity requests, writs of habeas corpus, grand jury and trial subpoenas and attachment to subpoenas and other documents. Receiving and analyzing incoming pleadings and correspondence and determines appropriate action and notes time limitations for responses. Assisting AUSAs handling violent crime and drug prosecution in pre-trial preparations by preparing, scheduling, reviewing, and organizing discovery, notifying, interviewing, and managing witnesses and researching case law. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

• You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Qualifications

To be qualified for the GS-09 Paralegal Specialist, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service; or a master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D, if related; or a combination of specialized experience and education. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience is defined as applying knowledge of the litigation process, local court rules and court procedures to perform assignments, such as, reviewing incoming documents to determine the need to prepare various legal documents; performing legal research to draft legal documents and correspondence and to verify citations and statutory references; analyzing for legal relevance to summarize data, make conclusions, and recommend appropriate action; communicating effectively with attorneys and conducting interviews; and utilizing automation support hardware and software to automate various legal documents and perform data retrieval. OR Education: a master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D, if related (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law). OR Combining Education and Experience: a combination of specialized experience and education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.
