This position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The incumbent is a Health Technician performing a variety of clinical and administrative functions. The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is a complexity 1A facility, classified as the highest in complexity within the Veterans Health Administration, and is one of the largest physical facilities in the VA system.

Duties

Knowledgeable of technical methods, techniques, procedures, and preparation. Deploys aseptic technique and follows guidelines used in performing venipuncture or blood collection on all patients according to doctor's orders; interprets orders proficiently on inpatients and outpatients. Identifies acceptable venipuncture sites(for bleeding time). Deploys technical methods, techniques, procedures, and preparation. Responsible for correctly identifying patients using at least two valid, using acceptable patients identifiers as required by JC, CAP and other regulatory agencies. Maintains patient confidentiality (HIPPA). Must be able to draw the appropriate number of tubes and type of tubes; ensuring the tubes meet quality, acceptability, integrity and volume standards required for optimum clinical sampling. Awareness of collections requiring special handling. Must label each and every tube as required and instructed with all necessary identifiers and information in the presence of the patient before proceeding. Must assure venipuncture site has ceased bleeding and also bandages the site before leaving the patient. Must have knowledge to perform Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT), Bleeding Time and other specialized blood collections. Requires direct patient contact and must treat all patients with the utmost courtesy and respect. Provides professional customer service. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:30pm (Subject to change based on the needs of the agency) Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician/PD03708A Physical Requirements: The work requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending, lifting, walking, stooping and stretching. The work requires manual dexterity and a large degree of concentration.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 04 grade level in the federal service; experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Specialized Experience: Performed blood collection using a variety of phlebotomy techniques including vacutainer system, syringe, butterfly or capillary finger sticks with minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required repeat collection, ensuring samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. label all blood tubes, and instruct patients on proper specimen collection procedures. Process for correctly identifying patient information according to regulatory agencies. and Performs all types of specimen collection courteously while providing patient comfort. This experience must be supported by your resume to be credible. OR, EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position., if related that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. OR COMBINATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-05 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05.
