Duties

****This position is temporary and has a Not-to-Exceed date. However, this position may be extended to the fullest legally allowable period without competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.**** Performs selected tasks and phases of routine studies and projects that require application of basic occupational field theory and principles in the technical area of engineering. Participates with senior personnel in conducting non-routine projects. Provides assistance in planning, monitoring, and conducting special studies, projects, and initiative

Requirements

  • Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualiflying accredited institution
  • Must sign a Participant Agreement
  • U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
  • Must be eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws
  • Males 18 years or older must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
  • You must be a student currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university
  • Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
  • The position is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program
  • Disclosure of Political Appointments
  • This position may require travel
  • This position may require drug testing and the candidate may be subject to passing a drug test upon selection
  • Selectee is expected to be granted with and/or maintain the appropriate security clearance required for the position
  • Selectee may be required to serve a probationary or trial period
  • Have and maintain a good academic standing with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for bachelor's programs and 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for master's program
  • Work may require travel away from the normal duty station on military and commercial aircraft
  • This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program
  • The actual work performed in this position has been reviewed and determined that it does not meet any of the exemption criteria defined in 5 CFR 551. This position has been designated as nonexempt
  • Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Failure to submit transcripts, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university will result in an ineligible rating. Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-05: Completion of 120 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.) Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-07: Completion of 18 semester hours or more of graduate level education or completion of degree requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement and current enrollment in a graduate degree program. NOTE: Superior Academic Achievement is defined as based on (1) class standing, (2) grade point average, or (3) honor society membership. REQUIRED AREA OF STUDY: Seeking a technical engineering degree. The curriculum must: with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. ***For completed educational programs or equivalent during Spring/Summer 2024, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university for Fall 2024 must be provided** KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilties and/or competencies in the following areas: Geospatial Concepts: A basic understanding of geospatial concepts and their application to mapping, drafting, surveying, cartography, sUAS (Small Unmanned Aerial Systems) and related fields. Skill in applying basic occupational theory, principles, concepts, and practices sufficient to perform student trainee assignments. Ability to follow instructions and guidance to complete assigned tasks and communicate information to others in oral or written format. Ability to analyze problems, identify significant factors, gather and interpret pertinent data, and apply established rules and procedures in order to recommend effective solutions. Ability to learn and apply basic investigative techniques to accomplish work in the subject-matter field. Technology Familiarity: Awareness of GIS, CADD, GPS, and sUAS technologies, with a basic understanding of their functions and applications. PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity; this position will be filled at the GS-05 and GS-07 depending on applicant qualifications and organizational requirements. The individual selected for this position may be considered for promotion to a higher grade without further competition upon meeting all legal and regulatory/program requirements. PLEASE NOTE: This is an open continuous announcement and will be used to fill vacancies as openings occur.
