The primary purpose of the position is to perform law enforcement work to maintain law and order, preserve the peace, protect life and civil rights, detect and investigate crimes, arrest or apprehend violators, and perform patrols within the assigned jurisdictions. This is a term position with an NTE date of 30JUN2026

Duties

This is a developmental position with known promotion potential to the target position of SCPD (9GM34) ,Police Officer, GS-0083-07. Incumbent works closely with the supervisor in performing duties identified in the full performance standard core personnel document/core document. This position may be filled at any grade level. Individual selected may be promoted without further competition, upon meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. Starting salary indicated on this vacancy announcement is for the (GS-05). Military Spouse candidates exercising their preference will be placed at the full performance level, if considered to be best qualified and selected. This position may be subject to a formalized training program and pay retention of 150% of the maximum rate of the basic pay is authorized for candidates requesting a Voluntary Change to lower Grade. Attainment of knowledge, skills, and abilities is required before promotion to the next higher grade and is dependent on demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the next higher grade level, meeting all regulatory requirements, and recommendation for promotion by the supervisor. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. Position Duties: Duty1: Performs the full spectrum of police officer duties with the assigned jurisdiction Duty2: Conducts Investigations/Surveillance. Duty3: Performs as Base Defense Operations Center (BDOC) Controller. Duty4: Performs emergency response and incident command and control.

  • This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, required initial and annual physical fitness/physical agility tests to include running, meet established hearing standards and discern colors, contrast, and depth
  • Must wear approved protective clothing such as body armor/ballistic plates, helmets, personal protective equipment, coats, boots, traffic vests and/or chemical protective equipment, (e.g. respirator mask).
  • The incumbent must wear a DAF Police Officer uniform as identified in the DAF Police AFI and required to meet dress and appearance standards when supporting non DoD agencies IAW the AFI
  • Must work an uncommon tour of duty, to include nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, rotating shifts, and recall.
  • Incumbent must qualify and remain qualified in the use of required weapons, as the incumbent will be required to use firearms in performing duties.
  • Must undergo initial job compatibility assessment.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate all security forces vehicles and installed equipment.
  • Subject to duty position evaluation on a pass/fail standard in accordance with AFI 36-2646, Security Forces Training and Standardization Evaluation Programs.
  • Must pass formal law enforcement training school as determined by AF/A4S and obtain DoD Peace Officer Standardization and Training Certificate. Incumbent must obtain and maintain qualifications and/or certifications.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-05: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. OR Combination of education and experience. OR Education: Successfully completed four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position.(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-06: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates the particular knowledge of standardized federal laws, regulations, methods, procedures, operating techniques, state, and local laws to perform tasks including, but not limited to pursuing and apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest; identifying and arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts; performing dispatcher duties involving passing of directions and information to officers on patrol assignments; seeking, detecting, and protecting evidence and witnesses at the scene of an incident; detaining witnesses and suspects; and making arrests and performing booking procedures. GS-07: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes knowledge of the full range of police and law enforcement services that require considerable training, experience, and proficiency to perform the full range of operations in preventing or resolving offenses; Also knowledge of an extensive body of standardized, optional, and innovative investigative procedures, techniques, and methods to detect, investigate, and resolve crimes and other incidents that are beyond the scope or requirements for solution on patrol assignments. Employees use this level of knowledge in performing a variety of standard and nonstandard assignments in resolving a wide range of conditions or criminal activities. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-04 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-05 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-06 level. One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. Due to the use of 120 day rosters, applicants within 120 days of completion of the TIG requirement are encouraged to apply. Note: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of law enforcement procedures, training requirements and operating methods required to perform the full range of police officer activities independently. 2. Knowledge of special operating requirements, methods, and procedures for enforcing specialized personnel access controls to prevent unauthorized access to areas where stringent security requirements are enforced. 3. Knowledge of appropriate use of force and self-defense techniques to protect oneself and others in threatening situations including the ability to subdue and control individuals as required. 4. Ability to operate motor vehicles have a gross weight of 7,000 pounds or less, loading capacities of 1ton or less, and 2 or 4 wheel drive to transport personnel and/or articles. 5. Ability to work and communicate effectively orally and in writing. 6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community management, employees, and other law enforcement agencies. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
