Duties

As a Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a variety of legal support services to the United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District of California, You will be assigned to the Criminal Division in the Sacramento office and your duties will include (but are not limited to): Responsible for the overall supervision, coordination, and assignment of Legal Administrative Specialists to casework and for ensuring adequate coverage during pretrial, trial and post-trial stages. Performs the full scope of supervisory responsibilities: assigns performance ratings, assesses individual skills and needs and recommends training, issues awards, address employee conduct and performance issues as appropriate, approves/disapproves leave requests, and deals effectively with employees on suggestions, complaints and grievances. Providing technical advice to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities to facilitate litigation decisions, trial preparation and trial presentation. Analyzing litigation support requirements to develop or recommend appropriate strategies to meet litigation needs. Recommending alternative methods and promoting the use of automated approaches as well as visual means of proof. Preparing computerized trial presentation programs by using and appropriately employing a variety of software packages including database, spreadsheet and word processing applications such as: Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Trial Director, Concordance, Eclipse, Everlaw, Time Map, Case Map, eScan It, etc., based on which software would be most effective for presentation of complex and voluminous evidence or to production of graphic demonstrative evidence, as well as meeting individual user needs. Performing tasks associated with the organization, preparation, delivery, and tracking of discovery in cases involving large volumes of documentary and/or digital evidence. Researching, analyzing, and summarizing relevant legal precedents for applicability to assigned cases as appropriate. Preparing and maintaining a variety of trial-related documents, e.g., discovery letters, exhibit lists, jury instructions, trial subpoenas, etc., by applying a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and applying practical litigative experience.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.

Qualifications

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is defined as experience organizing and directing the activities of legal support staff in the criminal functional area and ensuring work of subordinate staff is technically adequate and accurate. Experience working in a legal environment providing technical advice to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities; organizing and managing case specific discovery; analyzing complex litigation support requirements to develop or recommend appropriate strategies to meet litigation needs; using automated litigation support technology such as Trial Director, Concordance, Case Map, Eclipse, Everlaw, or related programs to organize voluminous case information for retrieval, prepare computerized trial presentations, and index digital evidence; researching, analyzing and summarizing relevant legal precedents; and preparing and maintaining a variety of trial-related documents.
