Duties

If selected, you will serve as a Legal Administrative Specialist with the United States Attorney's Office, District of South Carolina. You will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a wide variety of technical and litigation support services. Duties will include, but are not limited to: Performing a variety of automated support necessary to prepare, organize, index, develop and manage exhibits, evidence and other relevant data; Applying basic knowledge of Federal Criminal and Civil procedures; Assisting legal support staff in organizing voluminous discovery applications; Preparing and organizing exhibits for court proceedings which involves audio/video, transcripts, documents and visual materials, including charts, diagrams, photographs and models; Preparing computerized trial presentation programs; Providing automated support to present before a jury, grand jury or in other legal proceedings; and Assuring documents are organized for efficient automated storage and retrieval by preparing appropriate indices, defining data file search criteria and indexing/coding fields. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.

Qualifications

GS-5: To be eligible at the GS-5 level, you must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-4 level; or four (4) years of education above the high school level; or a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below. Specialized experience is defined as one (1) year of progressively responsible automated support services, or other work that indicates the ability to perform the duties of a Legal Administrative Specialist. Examples of specialized experience include: providing assistance to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities to facilitate litigation decisions, trial preparation and trial presentation; identifying software packages such as: databases, spreadsheets and word processing applications based on the effectiveness of presenting complex and voluminous evidence, scanning, indexing and controlling documents into a data base; and assuring documents are organized for efficient automated storage and retrieval by preparing appropriate indices. Education: Successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Combining Education and Experience: Successfully completed post-high school education may be used to meet the total one year of specialized experience requirement equivalent to the GS-4 grade level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.S-5: To be eligible at the GS-5 level, you must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-4 level; or four (4) years of education above the high school level; or a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
