The primary purpose of this position is to provide a student trainee in the Pathways Internship program with on-the-job training and guidance. The student trainee will serve as a lifeguard and perform other related swimming facility duties. ****THIS PUBLIC NOTICE COVERS ALL SUMMER HIRE STUDENT TRAINEE, GS-0199-1/2/3/4 POSITIONS FOR ALL TITLES****

Duties

****This position is temporary and has a Not-to-Exceed date. However, this position may be extended to the fullest legally allowable period without competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.**** GS-01/02/03: Monitors activities within assigned swimming areas. Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries .Assists in cleaning and maintaining the swimming facility. Performs gate control duties. Participates in required in service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR. GS-02: Assists water safety instructor in conducting swimming lessons. GS-03: Conducts swimming lessons following prescribed lesson plan. Participates in required in service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR, and to provide water safety instruction for the activities and skill levels taught. GS-04: Plans, organizes, and implements a well-rounded swimming program. Oversees day-to-day operation of swimming facility. Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries. Oversees general housekeeping of swimming facility. Performs gate control and administrative duties. Participates in required in service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR, and to provide water safety instruction for the activities and skill levels taught.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age. Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
  • You must be a student currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate) at a qualifying accredited institution
  • Must have a good academic standing (no less than 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for bachelor's programs and 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for master's program
  • Meet the qualification standards of the position at the time of application
  • This position is identified as having "regular contact with children" (e.g., youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed
  • Must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures. Must be able to obtain a nationally recognized basic first aid certification
  • Must be able to obtain a nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures. All certifications must remain current during the period of employment
  • Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills
  • Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment
  • Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds and over. Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required. A physical may be required
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays
  • This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program

  • Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the generalized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Student Trainee Positions. Failure to submit transcripts, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university will result in an ineligible rating. QUALIFICATIONS: For GS-01 grade level: Current enrollment in a high school diploma program For GS-02 grade level: Completion of high school diploma or equivalent no later than June 2024 AND acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university For GS-03 grade level: Completion of 30 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.) For GS-04 grade level: Completion of 60 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.) NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. ***For completed educational programs or equivalent during Spring/Summer 2024, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university for Fall 2024 must be provided** PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity; this position will be filled at the GS-01 through GS-04 depending on applicant qualifications and organizational requirements. The individual selected for this position may be considered for promotion to a higher grade without further competition upon meeting all legal and regulatory/program requirements. NOTE: This is an open continuous announcement and will be used to fill vacancies as openings occur.
