Duties

If selected for this position, you will serve as a senior legal assistant responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services in support of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). Typical work assignments will include: Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas. Proofreading legal briefs, memorandum, and other legal documents. Use comprehensive knowledge of legal processes, regulations, techniques, and procedures related to OCDEFT investigations and prosecutions. Independently, prepares legal actions such as indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, etc. Acts as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provides training, guidance, and technical assistance to other legal support staff. Performs extensive searches of record, reference and/or historical material. Conducts research of issues using various legal and non-legal databases and websites. Aids in preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial. Contributes to reports summarizing the case status, including legal issues, factual issues and case developments. Properly update and record in the OCDETF Management Information System (MIS). Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

To be eligible at the GS-08 level, you must have at least ONE year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is defined as providing assistance to attorneys by preparing such legal actions as indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, judgments, applications, notices, affidavits, summonses, grand jury subpoenas, rules to show cause, proofs of claim, and satisfaction of judgement; conducting non-complex research of legislation, statues, regulations, and court cases related to a legal specialty area; assisting attorneys in trial preparation with discovery and performing duties such as independently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; tracking filing, hearing, and trial dates, and scheduling conferences and interviews; and using software applications and legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, conduct factual research develop tables of contents and indices to briefs. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
