The Maintenance Mechanic Leader is a working leader of the Engineering for the Construction Shop with the Jennings Bryan Dorn VAMC, located in Columbia SC. As working leader; the hired employee will assign jobs and duties, as directed by the General Support Shop foreman to Woodcrafters, Maintenance Mechanics, Painters, Movers and Sign maker. The work involves a full range of tasks associated with installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair.

Duties

The Maintenance Mechanic Leader is a working leader of the Engineering for the Construction Shop with the Jennings Bryan Dorn VAMC, located in Columbia SC. As working leader; the hired employee will assign jobs and duties, as directed by the General Support Shop foreman to Woodcrafters, Maintenance Mechanics, Painters, Movers and Sign maker. The work involves a full range of tasks associated with installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair. Main duties include but are not limited to: Communicate with other shops to see that needed materials and tools are available and those necessary tasks requiring coordination. Review drawings and specifications for new construction projects and makes recommended changes as the building subject matter expert. Performs inspections on new construction and renovation projects as needed. Knowledge in a full range of tasks associated with installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of all, air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, ventilation, pipe fitting, plumbing, general maintenance work; which includes the maintenance and repair of interior and maintenance work. exterior building operations, repair and maintenance work. Responsible to the supervisor for nonsupervisory work assignments that are of the same general kind and level as that done by the regular group led. Checks work while in progress and when finished ensures that the supervisor's instructions on work sequence. - Have a thorough working knowledge of, and ability to communicate to others, the safe working requirements for construction and maintenance. Responsible to the supervisor for assuring that the work assignments of the group led are carried out, by passing on to other workers the instructions received from the supervisor and getting work started. Demonstrate proper work methods; ensuring that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available; and that needs stock is obtained from supply locations. Physical Requirements: Must be in good physical condition to perform assigned work. Physical exertion, such as lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes, is required. Physical efforts, such as walking, climbing, crawling and bending and strains such as working in confining spaces or in crouching or stooping positions for extended period of time are encountered much of the time. Required to perform work from elevated platforms, ladders, and/or man-lifts. Work areas may be located at extreme heights. Must have color vision, good hearing, and manual dexterity. May work in adverse weather conditions. Working Conditions: Must often perform work under unpleasant, disagreeable, or hazardous conditions. Hired employee will normally be expected to work outdoors. On some jobs the incumbent will work in dusty, dirty, drafty, and noisy conditions. The equipment and tools used are of the nature that requires a high special care and alertness to avoid injuries. Incumbent may be exposed to high temperature, steam pipes, close ventilation while working in areas such as manholes, crawlspaces and attics. Incumbent may be exposed to high voltages in the normal course of duties, as well as electric shock hazard. Incumbent will use appropriate tools and protective equipment for each task as required by policy and applicable national codes.
