This position is located at the Clarksburg, West Virginia VA Medical Center in the Facilities Management Service Line. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain (service and repair) mechanical, electrical, and industrial equipment and systems.

Duties

Painting: The work involves coverage of a variety of surfaces by patching, sanding, dusting, and applying paint by brush, spray, or roller to interior or exterior surfaces. Additional incumbent work activities include paint application to machinery and equipment; remove existing wallpaper, properly prepare work surfaces and apply paint or vinyl wall covering; perform other directly related work as charged. Carpentry: Incumbent is responsible for performing and completing work order assignments according to specifications, supervisory requirements, and so that will be used properly and not wasted. Incumbent will be responsible for condition of shop, quality and workmanship, proper use and care of tools, equipment, and materials. Incumbent will be required to store materials properly and in their proper locations. Incumbent will be responsible for selecting the proper hardware, parts, and materials for a job or project. Incumbent will estimate material requirements and assist the Maintenance Supervisor with material orders, nomenclature pricing and vendor information. Incumbent will be responsible for employing safe working practices and following VAMC policies and procedures. Incumbent Is under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. Incumbent should not require direct supervision and is given considerable latitude to carry out tasks and assignments. Lock Smith: Preforms installations, routine maintenance, preventive maintenance inspections, adjustments, troubleshooting, emergency entry, lock picking, overhauling, and repairs of mechanical, magnetic and electronic locking devices such as mortise, rim cylindrical, deadbolt, office equipment locks, padlocks card access systems, combination, panic and emergency exit locking devices while applying established trade practice and procedures. The incumbent also adjusts, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, installs, and performs emergency entry for a variety of mechanical and electronic safe combination locks which are typically installed in secured units such as safes, vaults, cabinets and chest. These devices contain such features as dual locking capabilities that interact mechanically with timing mechanisms, electronic, other combination locks or actuating mechanisms, and security container locking bolts. These locking devices are designed to work in conjunction with other components and equipment to form a complete secure system. The locksmith will be involved in key production by means of impressing, duplication and/or code cutting. The locksmith will perform per the Master Key System for recombination of cores for all types of key-operated locking devices. Physical Requirements: Heavy physical efforts are required. Must be able to lift heavy objects, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and crawl and stand on feet for extended periods of time. Position must be able to work in tight and restrictive spaces such as under buildings, under equipment, in attics, in tunnels, etc., and at high elevations such as on roofs, scaffolds, ladders, in towers, etc., in excess of 30 feet. Position works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. Work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and arm movement. Position sometimes works in cramped areas, on temporary platforms, and overhead and frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 20 kilograms (45 pounds). Position occasionally lifts heavier items with assistance. Working Conditions: Position must be able to work under stressful conditions typical to the hospital environment. Must be able to meet deadlines, work with others and to adapt to often quick changes in assignments and procedures as necessary to get the work completed. Often position must work in confined and poorly ventilated areas, both inside and outside. Position is subject to working in all types of weather including inclement weather as position is deemed essential to the vital function of the hospital. Position is subject to various conditions that may result in burns, abrasions, cuts, and working in areas that are hot, cold, damp, dusty, dirty and potential for coming into contact with contaminated articles. Subject to possible injuries from falling off of ladders, scaffolds, etc. Position is required to wear all personal protective equipment assigned as each situation warrants, such as eye, hearing, head, feet and respiration protective devices. Some of the protective devices used by the position are uncomfortable and are worn for long periods. Position must be respirator fit tested annually.
