Duties

Operate gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction, such as road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front end loaders, excavators, backhoes, wheel loaders in all types of terrain environments. Use equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for trails, roads, dams, dikes, reservoirs, culverts, cattle guards, water developments (springs, wells, troughs, storages, pipelines, etc.). Move earth on mountains and steep slopes, graded curves, and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, hilly forests, and other surfaces with similar rough terrain/features. Maintain and install fences, cattle guards, and corrals.

Qualifications

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include at least 3 out of 4 of the following: (1) operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as road graders, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, or trench diggers in all terrain environments; (2) maintaining and/or repairing roads, ditches, shoulders, or roadbeds; (3) conducting equipment and/or motor vehicle routine/minor preventive maintenance, repairs, and/or safety inspections; (4) interpreting OSHA standards and an organization's safety regulations in order to work in a safe manner. SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs operation of vehicles, and a class B Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements is required. You must be able to obtain one before entry on duty. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by entry on duty will receive no further consideration for this position. If selected for Chama, NM you must be able to obtain a Class A license within 1 year as a condition of employment. If selected for Socorro, NM you must be able to obtain a Class "A" license with tanker endorsements within 1 year of employment. Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the adjustments made, and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Work Environment: The operation of large and complicated gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment in difficult circumstances increases exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective hearing devices and hard hats to prevent injury. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
