Duties

If selected for this position, the incumbent supports civil and/or criminal litigation teams by performing routine litigation support tasks necessary to prepare or manage electronic discovery, evidence, exhibits, and other electronically stored information relevant to investigations and casework, using a variety of methods and software applications. The work requires technical knowledge and skill in handling electronic case materials, which must be organized, processed, reviewed, produced in discovery, and presented in court, following established procedures. The work also requires the application of a basic knowledge of the litigation process, federal rules of procedure and evidence, and court requirements when implementing technical solutions needed for civil and/or criminal cases. Typical work assignments will include: Works with AUSAs. Performs routine litigation support tasks necessary to process common electronically stored information (e.g., PDF files, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint files, emails, etc.) and prepare it for review or production by the litigation team. Consults with litigation team members (e.g., attorneys, investigators, legal support staff) to understand case needs and technical requirements. Develops a plan for processing electronic files consistent with those requirements. Maintains accurate and current records regarding incoming electronic case materials, adhering to office tracking protocols, such as by completing standardized inventory or tracking forms. Uses software applications to extract electronic case materials from storage devices or download electronic case materials from secure file transfer sites. Ensures proper security is maintained over case and litigation support project materials, in accordance with office policies and procedures. Uses specialized software applications to perform basic processing of common electronic files. Performs routine litigation support tasks relating to litigation teams' review of common electronically stored information. Consults with litigation team members to understand case needs and technical requirements. Develops a plan for production of electronic files consistent with those requirements. Generates basic electronic discovery productions (e.g., Bates-numbered images with redactions and searchable text) that comply with production specifications and deadlines, including productions from document review databases. When requested and following established procedures, maintains accurate and current records regarding outgoing discovery productions. When requested and following established procedures, prepares electronic discovery productions for transmittal to opposing parties. Provides customer support services to litigation team members relating to their use of litigation technology applications. Regularly communicates with litigation team members about the status of litigation support projects (e.g., processing, production preparation, etc.) and the time and resources needed to complete projects. Maintains inventory and tracks litigation support equipment (e.g., external optical media readers and duplicators; specialized scanners; large format printers; etc.). Maintains litigation support equipment in good working order. Trains users on equipment's use. Works with litigation team members to understand case presentation needs. Suggests methods or software applications for presenting evidence or producing demonstrative exhibits. Creates electronic versions of exhibits for court filings, depositions, hearings, or trials. Operates software or equipment to present exhibits during civil or criminal legal proceedings. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

Qualifications

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized experience: I have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: performing routine litigation support tasks necessary to process common electronically stored information (e.g., PDF files, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint files, emails, etc.) and prepare it for review or production by the litigation team. Using specialized software applications (e.g., processing software) to perform processing tasks and meet the technical needs of criminal and civil litigation teams. Consulting with litigation team members (e.g., attorneys, investigators, legal support staff) to understand case needs and technical requirements. Generate basic electronic discovery productions (e.g., Bates numbered images with redactions and searchable text) that comply with production specifications and deadlines, including productions from document review databases, OR Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Law, Legal Studies): A Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B., J.D., MLS, or MA in Legal Studies); OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position; 0R Combining Education and Experience: Combination of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required graduate education you have earned. Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100percent to qualify. (Transcripts required). In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. Education
