Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for handling some of the most complex and difficult cases in the United States Attorney's office (USAO) because they may require organizing, tracking, and analyzing thousands or tens of thousands of items of evidence, millions of data elements, or involve untried or especially novel computer or digital imaging applications. Typical work assignments will include: Responsibility for the overall supervision, coordination, and assignment of criminal support staff to criminal casework and for ensuring adequate coverage during pre-trial, trial, and post-trial stages. Providing technical advice to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities to facilitate litigation decisions, trial preparation and trial presentation. Assisting and/or training attorneys and legal support staff in organizing voluminous case information for efficient retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing, and controlling of documents into a data base. Ensuring equipment is in place for courtroom and grand jury sessions. Utilizing a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case or program-specific legal matters, and participating in assigned areas of criminal proceedings, e.g., electronic discovery. Preparing and maintaining a variety of trial-related documents, e.g., discovery letters, exhibit lists, jury instructions, voir dire, motions in limine, trial subpoenas, by applying a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and application of practical litigative experience. Providing advice to attorneys and other legal support staff on the most effective and efficient ways to prepare, present and maintain a variety of administrative legal documents, e.g., discovery letters, exhibit lists, jury instructions and subpoenas. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.

  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.

Qualifications

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must meet at least one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience organizing and directing the activities of legal support staff; providing legal, technical, and clerical support to attorneys; providing technical advice to legal support staff; assisting attorneys and managing legal support staff in organizing voluminous case information; performing a variety of complex administration support relating to the management and administrative support of the division. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
