About the Position: 596th Transportation Brigade provides surface deployment and distribution services from Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point, Military Ocean Terminal Concord, the West Coast and Alaska, in order to project combat power and lethality and meet our nation's strategic objectives. Serves as a Braker-Switcher on 120 ton diesel electric locomotives. Performs individual switching, signaling, flagging, coupling, uncoupling, brake settings, applying safety with movement of railcars.

Duties

Monitor the safe movement of trains and railcars. Comply and follow railroad safety and movement regulations. Signal the locomotive engineer of braking and stopping distances in connection with coupling. Observe safety tasks with the movement of box cars containing hazardous cargo. Set out, transfer and pick up rail cards by uncoupling, setting, and releasing car brakes and air brake hoses. Select and use proper railroad signal codes and techniques to alert locomotive engineers and railroad crew members for normal and emergency conditions. Set and reset track switches when box cars are out and picked up.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter
  • This position has a requirement to lift 20 to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position in inclement weather essential. Work is primarily performed outdoors and in all types of weather conditions.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug test screening and random testing thereafter.
  • This position requires working irregular shifts, holidays, weekends, and special situations to provide coverage for organization.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Braker-Switcher~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to work with railroad tracks; pick up and set out points for locomotives. Assist with checking railroad track switches. Assist with using railroad signals to alert crew members. Assist with the pick up of train cars. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Must be able to climb aboard locomotives and train cars, sometimes while they are moving or have slippery steps, rungs, and grab irons. Required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and put forth similar effort in pushing and removing obstacles from the railway. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works under many adverse conditions in both good and bad weather. Frequently exposed to loud noise, fumes and odors. Exposed to possible injuries from accidents. May wear protective clothing, such as safety shoes and gloves. Any unusual environmental working conditions that may arise will be compensated for under an appropriate category of the environmental pay regulation.
