Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing substantive legal support to the District of Virgin Islands. Typical work assignments will include: Performs a variety of duties requiring the application of legal evaluations of litigation support service needs, ranging from litigation processes, legal terminology, local court rules and court procedures. Provides technical assistance to Attorney's in a developmental capacity to facilitate the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with e-Discovery and other procedural requirements. Performs basic legal research; gathers and analyzes data and evaluates its usefulness in resolving legal issues. Utilizes automated resources and technology for the development, presentation, and litigation of federal cases, including legal research tools. Utilizes a variety of Automated Litigation Support (ALS) software applications to locate, organize, analyze, characterizes and present information that is pertinent to the government's position in the case. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

Qualifications

GS-07: To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level. Specialized experience is defined as: performing routine litigation support assignments such as assisting with organizing case information; preparing discovery productions, including scanning and coding documents and creating DVDs; assisting attorneys in preparing for court such as preparing exhibits; and preparing a variety of legal documents; assisting in the use of technology to organize digital evidence; and editing a variety of legal documents; such as information request, pleadings, correspondence and memos. Education: Have one full year of graduate education in a closely related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law, Information Technology, Computer Science) that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. OR have Bachelor's Degree or expect to complete the requirements for a Bachelor's degree within the next 9 months AND possess at least one of the following criteria: class standing in the upper third of the graduating class; an overall GPA of 3.0 OR at least a 3.0 based on courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; a GPA of at least 3.5 based on the average of required courses completed in my major field OR based on the average of required courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; OR election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. To qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. GS-09: To be eligible at the GS-09 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is defined as: assisting an attorney with trial preparation, including making recommendations on how to proceed with trial presentations; utilizing office automation tools in order to create physical and digital trial presentations; working with investigators, agents, and legal support staff; handling a wide variety of evidence and discovery; and providing technical assistance to litigation teams. Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law, Information Technology, Computer Science): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. To qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.
