Duties

If selected for this position, you will serve as a Legal Administrative Specialist with the United States Attorney's Office, Middle District of Tennessee. Duties will include, but are not limited to: Prepares various legal documents such as motions, briefs, affidavits, and pleadings; proofreads and cite-checks legal briefs and assembles tables of authorities and tables of contents for legal briefs. Assists in conducting factual research on individuals and companies using computerized databases and other sources. Completes administrative legal functions, organizes files, and manages electronic documents and evidence. Provides technical assistance to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities to develop and facilitate litigation decisions, trial preparation and trial presentation. Prepares and organizes evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial. Using various software applications to efficiently open cases, and organize, analyze, and present case materials for discovery. Prepare computerized trial exhibits and presentations using hardware such as printer, plotters, audio-visual devices, among others. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

Qualifications

GS-07: To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: experience providing trial support to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, conduct factual research, and prepare courtroom presentations. Education: One full year of graduate education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law) OR Completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree and meet one of the following superior academic achievement provisions: (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for all completed undergraduate course work or for all courses completed in the last two full years of undergraduate work; (2) a GPA of 3.5 or higher for all courses in the major field of study, or those courses in a major completed in the last two full years of undergraduate work; (3) ranking in the upper one-third of a college, university, or major subdivision or (4) membership in a national scholastic honor society. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. GS-09: To be eligible at the GS-09 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as: experience reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels for completeness of information; retrieving and assembling information for hearing and/or trial use; researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; knowledge of litigation support principles and processes; and using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence, and related materials. Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. To qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.
