The Lead Survey Technician serves on the Land Services Team, Technical Services Branch, Western Federal Lands Highway Division. The position is the Team Leader and Senior Survey Technician. Incumbent organizes, directs, and administers the program for field surveying, survey data mapping, and managing land surveying procedures and technologies.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements for series 0817 (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above): Specialized experience is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector. To determine if you may be eligible for this grade, review the following grade specific details. You will be asked a few questions as part of your application but make sure to verify how you meet this experience in your resume.   For the GS-12: You must have at least one year of specialized experience, equal or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which included all of the following: Experience using concepts, principles, procedures, regulations, laws, and instructions applicable to surveying. Experience in providing functional assistance in making decisions pertaining to surveying. Experience in preparing and/or executing programs, policies, procedures, and activities in surveying. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Technical Competence - Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues. Surveying - Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods used in the measurement or determination of land boundaries, distances, elevations, areas, angles, and other features of the earth’s surface. Team Building - Inspires and fosters team commitment, spirit, pride, and trust. Facilitates cooperation and motivates team members to accomplish group goals. Oral Communication - Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens effectively; clarifies information as needed. Writing - Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material, that is appropriate for the intended audience. For all types of consideration, experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
