This position is located at the Hampton VA Medical Center in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service Line (PM&RS). The position combines direct patient care activities with support functions with the Physical Therapist (PT) / Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA), Occupational Therapist (OT) /Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) and Kinesiotherapist (KT). The functions are both characterized by both clinical and administrative duties.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Ability to apply a practical knowledge of therapeutic methods and techniques in order to perform the work of this position. Knowledge of skill and set-up and cleaning of selected clinical equipment and devices to include the exercise equipment, bikes, treadmill, hi-lo mat tables, ultrasound, electrical stimulation units, TENS units, Pronex Cervical traction, weights, ankle weights, dowels, etc. Knowledge of infection control processes and universal precautions. Provide appropriate methods and levels of disinfecting to the assigned equipment. Sensitivity to changes in behavior or in the physical condition of patients, knowledge of treatment techniques and skill in motivating patients. Insight and mature judgment to observe, assess and report to therapists on the progress and reactions of patients. Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment with a variety of software to store data and produce documents. Knowledge of the English language including reading comprehension, medical terminology (including prefixes and suffixes) speaking, spelling and writing and specific knowledge of the medical terminology and symbols applicable to the therapy field. Language skills are such that the comprehension/production of spoken and written messages enhance therapy programs. Knowledge of infection control processes and universal precautions. Provide appropriate methods and levels of disinfecting to the assigned equipment. Knowledge of VA regulations concerning patient's rights, responsibilities, and confidentiality of patient information. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/24/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Individual Occupation Requirement Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an assistant to one of the specialized therapies such as occupational, physical, manual arts, corrective, or educational therapy; or experience gained as an assistant or aid in patient care, social work, or psychology where the duties involved actual participation in physical medicine and activities of a hospital or clinic. OR, For GS-05 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an assistant to one of the specialized therapies such as occupational, physical, manual arts, corrective, or educational therapy; or experience gained as an assistant or aid in patient care, social work, or psychology where the duties involved actual participation in physical medicine and activities of a hospital or clinic. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: ability to apply a practical knowledge of therapeutic methods and techniques and skill in motivating patients; sensitivity to changes in behavior or in the physical condition of patients, knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment with a variety of software to store data and produce documents; knowledge of the English language including reading comprehension, medical terminology, speaking, spelling, and writing and specific knowledge of medical terminology and symbols applicable to the therapy field. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: This position requires bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, and walking on a daily basis. Incumbent must pass a physical through the employee Health department at this facility.
