The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Fitness and Sports Director and the Lead Fitness and Sports Specialist in the planning, managing, and administering of comprehensive, year-round installation fitness and sports programs and their associated operations.

Duties

Performs assigned implementation procedures, coordination, and oversight of Fitness Assessment Cell (FAC) Operations and PT Program in accordance with DAFMAN 36-2905 Air Force Physical Fitness Programs. Promotes a variety of vibrant fitness programs based on customer feedback and survey results. Uses professional knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts and practice of physical fitness and sports programs to support and provide customer service to a wide variety of groups and organizations. Serves as Budget Coordinator for the Fitness and Sports Intramural Program. Manages publicity for the Fitness and Sports Intramural Programs. Manages all fitness equipment and ensures their operation, cleanliness, and presentation of a professional fitness image.

  • Incumbent must be able to do moderate lifting and carrying (up to 50 lbs.) for short distances, and reach above the shoulders
  • Employee performs other related duties as assigned
  • A college degree in physical education, exercise science, exercise physiology, kinesiology, health education, or a related field is highly desirable
  • An Air Force approved primary fitness certification (American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine, National Exercise Trainers Association or similar recommended)

Qualifications

Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions. Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Education Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. OR Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that demonstrated the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs. Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-05, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes applying the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs. Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations. NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. OR EDUCATION: 1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.) OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience which may be used to meet total experience requirements. (NOTE: You must submit your transcripts.) FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. Due to the use of 120 day rosters, applicants within 120 days of completion of TIG requirements are encouraged to apply KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of the principles and techniques of physical fitness programs including knowledge of exercise science, strength conditioning, nutrition, weight loss/control, cardiovascular endurance, and exercise prescription; of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology as related to exercise and physical fitness; assessment principles and procedures, and exercise testing equipment. Knowledge of fitness and exercise program design to plan, implement, and conduct individual and group fitness programs that will improve the military member's fitness level, allow compliance with personal fitness standards, and encourages program participation to increases unit cohesion. Knowledge of program and facilities management, safety, fire, environmental and emergency regulations, practices, and procedures. Skill and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships; promote and report on the program; resolve problems; and answer questions relating to the program. Ability to perform and conduct training on performing individual health risk appraisals, comprehensive fitness assessments, and proper exercise techniques for cardiovascular and resistance equipment. Ability to estimate and track budgetary requirements, plan along creative or original lines and work with supervisors and non-supervisory employees who have a variety of fitness backgrounds. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
