This position will serve as a phlebotomist, specimen processor, and customer service support in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The primary purpose of this position is for phlebotomy and specimen collection duties in support of Atlanta VA Heath Care System. These duties can be performed in the inpatient units, outpatient area of the main laboratory as well as at any of the community based outpatient-based clinic (CBOC).

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs venipunctures by correctly identifying patients as to name and full social security number, selecting appropriate collection devices (i.e., proper collection tube, appropriate anticoagulant, etc; adhering to correct order of draw and taking any necessary precautions inspecimen preparation (i.e., mixing, protect carotenes from light, place ammonias in ice slurry, etc.). Selects and cleans an appropriate venipuncture site. Delivers specimens from collection areas to the main laboratory for analysis and/or prepares specimens for transport for off site locations. Receives and labels specimens received from other sections for analysis that includes cultures, blood, body fluids, urine, exudates, transudates and tissues. Follow laboratory procedures for collecting specimens in the appropriate container, maintains specimen under appropriate conditions, following guidelines for collecting timed specimens, blood cultures and compatibility (cross-matches). Logs telephone requests for tests, ensuring proper orders are obtained and specimens are collected according to the urgency or specific time indicated. Assists in the phlebotomy and safety training of staff, students and other health professionals. Complies with all Medical Center policies and procedures regarding safety practices. Assesses the validity of a process, recognizing common environmental or other considerations that could affect laboratory processes. Maintains adequate supplies for all phlebotomy and specimen procurement procedures ensuring work area is adequately stocked. Assist in the purchase, inventory, and distribution of various laboratory supplies. Applies basic specimen collection requirements regarding infection control techniques, site selection, and integrity of sample. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/10/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Collect, sort, and distribute bundle laundry consisting of personal items. Check bundle items against laundry ticket upon receipt and before return. Ability to instruct, supervise operations ensuring the proper collection, handling, and disposal of solid waste of the medical center. Follow instructions with less supervision. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Considerable physical effort is exerted while loading and unloading linen onto and off of trailer, picking up and loading soiled linens into turn around carts and delivering exchange carts. Turn around cards may weigh 500-700 pounds when filled. Soiled linen bags may weigh 40 pounds when filled. Moderate physical effort is exerted while lifting, bending and stooping while unloading and loading linen carts. Frequent lifting linens and linen packs weighing 15 - 25 pounds and pushing carts weighing 200 - 250 pounds. Moderate physical effort is expended when handling patient personal effects, such as luggage, trunks, boxes, TVs hanging clothes, etc.
