Duties

If selected for this position as a GS-0690-13 Industrial Hygienist your duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Manage a comprehensive industrial hygiene program for NIH. Develop instructions and control procedures covering complex potential health hazards. Review plans for new or modified processes and facilities. Develop policy and program objectives on a wide variety of occupational health problems. Direct a training program in industrial hygiene. Conduct studies and/or surveys performing analysis of industrial hygiene and safety issues. Provide expert advice and consultation to management officials on industrial hygiene matters.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: A. completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate/higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR B. completed a bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR C. a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to the above, to qualify for an Industrial Hygienist position at the GS-13 level: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning and administering an industrial hygiene program for an organization including analyzing and interpreting regulations and policies to determine their applicability to an organization's programs; developing and implementing methods to eliminate or control hazardous and environmental conditions in a work environment; providing training and technical advice to program staff on occupational health and safety programs and issues; evaluating proposed new work processes or materials to assure incorporation of adequate measures for prevention of occupational disease hazards; and preparing technical reports based on toxicological data. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
