Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Operates trucks with half-ton capacity to trucks with gross weight vehicle weight ratings in excess of 30,000 pounds to transport laundry, lab materials, mail supplies, refuse and patients Operates a variety of passenger vehicles to transport patients to and from appointments Operates vehicles with standard and automatic transmissions Operates dump trucks and tractors for snow and trash removal, etc. Operates a trash compactor truck Loads and unloads cargo in a safe manner Makes minor repairs to vehicle or equipment in emergency situations Cleans and washes vehicles operated Transports infectious waste to local and distant disposal sites Completes trip forms and computes mileage for log sheets Performs other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 11:00am to 7:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Requires that you have no physical limitations in that 85% of duties require moderate to strenuous physical effort and dexterity of foot, hand and mind at all times. While operating the laundry truck you must be able to handle 50 to 100 pound bags and move carts weighing up to 1800 pounds consistently during work schedule while transporting patients. You will be required at times to lift patients from wheelchairs to vehicles and in reverse. You will be required to load and unload heavy patients by stretcher when using an ambulance. While performing your duties you will be required to work under inclement conditions exposed to rain, snow, freezing conditions and extreme high temperatures; while operating trucks, cars, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment and other emergency conditions for long periods of time; when loading or unloading cargo. You will drive in all kinds of weather on slippery and wet roads, snow and rain storms, and in all kinds of traffic conditions. You will be exposed to the possibility of serious accidents, cuts, sprains and broken bones while loading or unloading cargo. You will be in close contact with veterans, members, and their families, some of whom may be difficult. You must be courteous, patient and tactful at all times. You will be required to handle contaminated waste, refuse and many other unpleasant items. You will be subject to call back duty for snow removal, icy or hazardous conditions and /or emergencies such as ambulance trips or other emergency trips using cars, station wagons, etc. as necessary during evenings, nights, weekend and/or holidays. You are required to obey written and oral safety procedures and when unsure of safety procedure or unsure of how to proceed safely, you will contact your supervisor for instructions. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Ability to do the work of a motor vehicle operator without more than normal supervision (Screen-Out) A valid current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Screen-Out) Passenger (P) Endorsement on your CDL (Screen-Out) Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Reliability and Dependability as a Motor Vehicle Operator IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
