You will serve as a Pipefitter in the Temporary Services Shop, Production Resources Department of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will cut, thread, bend, and assemble pipefittings using shop machinery and equipment. You will position, secure, and connect piping systems with various fixtures. You will make minor repairs to hoses, pumps, and fittings. You will hook up hoses, pumps, and fittings and then operate that equipment to offload fuel and lubricating oil from ships. You will test piping systems under pressure to determine conformance to standards and to locate leaks and other defects.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to lay out, cut, bend, assemble, install, operate, and remove pipe fittings and fixtures to construct or maintain temporary piping systems (i.e. steam heating, hot water heating, high pressure air, oil, and steam line systems, water/sewage disposal systems, etc.). Ability to repair, test, and install high pressure steam booms and man's main stop valve for shipboard steam testing. Ability to operate liquid waste treatment systems, demineralizers, evaporators, tanks, associated gauges, and meters. Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and sketches. Ability to use tools common to trade such as threaders, saws, shears, drills, wrenches, brazing, and soldering equipment.
