Duties

You will serve as a TELECOMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST inside the INFRASTRUCTURE MAINTENANCE DIVISION, of the EXTERNAL SUPPORT DIVISION, NAVAL COMPUTER AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS AREA MASTER STATION ATLANTIC, NORFOLK, VA. You will perform inside and outside plant work of the division, which is tasked with accomplishing construction, installation, maintenance and repair services of fiber optics, and copper communications infrastructure. You will determine vehicles, tools, material requirements, and work methods to be used to complete assigned work. You will troubleshoot, test splices for shorts, opens, transposed/reversed pairs, crosses, splits, shield continuity, shield to earth grounds, bonding and grounding, on copper cables. You will maintain accountability of all items, vehicles, tools, and test equipment assigned to the section.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION such as: Experience applying a comprehensive knowledge of outside plant and inside plant practices concerning telephone maintenance to isolate problems and ensure the adequate performance of troubleshooting techniques. Experience reading building blueprints, telephone infrastructure drawing, diagrams and have a basic working knowledge of electrical theories and principles. Experience operating and understanding various electrical and electronic tests and locating equipment such as OHM meters, ground fault meters, ground test sets, open/split locators, time domain reflectometers, optical attenuation meters, optical time domain reflectometers, global positioning satellite systems, atmospheric testing equipment utilized in confined space work and record readings as appropriate, and gasoline powered equipment such as water pumps, generators, and lighting systems. Experience using tools such as electrical and manual hand drills, torque wenches, screwdrivers, long-nosed pliers, hammers, diagonal cutters, fiber optic glass cleavers, fusion splicing machine, and other specialized tools of the trade.
