You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (NAVAL ARCHITECTURE) in the STRUCTURAL SURVEILLANCE BRANCH (Code 413), TRIDENT REFIT FACILITY (TRIREFFAC) of TRIREFFAC KINGS BAY.

Duties

You will be responsible for complete projects involving a variety of complex structural and preservation problems discovered as a result of required shipboard inspections. You will perform engineering analysis and calculations to determine minimum hull, framing, and planting thickness, which must comply to the many and strict requirements established by the Naval Sea System Command. You will prepare technical reports of inspections results and repairs accomplished for submittal to higher authority Naval Sea System Command for certification of submarines to design test depth. You will work with cognizant functional areas to allow timely inspection, identification, and resolution of structural problems that may affect project schedule adherence. You will assist in training new engineers and engineering technicians in the organization. You will be responsible for providing practical application of naval architecture and structural engineering principals to the solution. You will be responsible for the scheduling, planning, production, installation, and functional checkout related to Naval Architecture and Structural Systems. You will be responsible for the satisfactory integration of these systems to meet the performance requirements of the ship. You will be responsible for and providing technical guidance and technical leadership to others.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an IT-II Level designation.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • This position will be required to travel for worldwide deployment. Must pass physical requirements (DGAR Screening) to allow deployment in support of SSGN overseas voyage repairs.
  • Certain incentives (such as Recruitment or Relocation) may be authorized to eligible selectees. A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee.

Qualifications

(GS-10) Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-09) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience providing expert level support and extensive knowledge in practical submarine structural design. Experience collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data based upon actual shipboard structural inspections of the Pressure Hull, Non-pressure Hull, Tanks, Framing, and Steering and Diving Components. Experience interpreting and applying specifications, standards, and specific URO/MRC criteria associated with Structural Engineering Systems such as drawings, sketches, or various planning documents. Experience with progressively responsibility in primary structures such as pressure hull framing, hard tank framing, or pressure hull envelope which involves pressure hull plating, reactor compartment, closure bulkheads, inserts and penetrations, sea chests, and trunks. Experience demonstrating structural shipboard systems inspection and control requirements associated with system engineering and planning work. Experience with the Navy preservation directives; NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32, NSTM Ch-631, and Submarine Preservation Maintenance Standard. (GS-09) Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-07) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with the Naval Architectural concepts, principles, and practices related to Submarine Hull structures. Experience conducting investigations and research of various technical documents to determine if any points of interference with other submarine systems, obtain opinions from specialists in other areas, and gather information as needed to ensure the adequacy of conclusions reached. Experience in preservation and submarine hull inspections in support of the TRIDENT Class Submarine Preservation Maintenance Plan. Experience with engineering analysis and calculations. Experience working with other team members to accomplish work, coordinating advance planning, reviewing work of other team members, overseeing waterfront work, and researching preservation problems and resolving issues that arise during the course of in-process work. In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position:

Education for GS-09 position:
  • 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree
or
  • master's or equivalent graduate degree

Certifications:
Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.
