Duties

Install, test, repair and, maintain high voltage electric power-controlling equipment and distribution lines, electrical wiring systems and appliances in shops and domestic quarters. Operate a heavy truck to transport tools, equipment and, supplies to and from the work site. Perform the full range of work involved in the installation, maintenance and, repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. Troubleshoot, calibrate, modify and, repair electronic tripping mechanisms located in substation reclosure devices. Make modifications to the charging circuit of 24 volts to the reclosure device and, batteries and, troubleshoots and repairs components of rectifier circuits. Install residential and industrial services by running wires from pole to entrance weather head or in conduit. Install street lighting circuits, lamps and, related hardware. Run load tests on transformers checks and corrects circuit malfunctions using a variety of test instruments. Operate standby generator equipment and truck with winch and power-takeoff and, other related equipment.

  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position. The incumbent may be required to report to work in the event of a natural disaster, inclement weather, or crisis.

Qualifications

To qualify for a High Voltage Electrician, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and that you have the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a High Voltage Electrician without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Perform moderately heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying of equipment and material weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift or pull heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or, with assistance from other workers. Use block and tackle, pulleys and, other lifting devices. Required to crouch, stand, kneel and, stoop while installing, repairing and, testing electrical equipment in confined spaces. Work above ground from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level and, in trenches and manholes. Work requires bending stooping, climbing and, standing for long periods while installing, repairing and, testing electrical equipment in manholes and overhead distribution lines. Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Exposed to danger form explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts and, bruises. Exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities. Exposed to extremes of weather when working outdoors and, to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes. Subject to electrical burns while working around high voltage electrical lines, broken bones from falls from poles and, strains from awkward work positions. Exposed to chemicals such as insulating oil from transformers and oil switches. Use protective devices such as ear plugs, safety hats and, non-conductive gloves and footwear. The incumbent of this position who will be selected will be designated as an emergency employee. The term "Emergency Employee" is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.
